Blacksmiths take bars of metal from miners and work them into finely crafted arms and armor. There are many unique weapons and other armaments that cannot be found on any of the vendors or monsters in the game, but can only be created by blacksmiths. Blacksmiths can create weapons, mail armor for Paladins or Warriors, and trade items. Blacksmiths can construct special sharpening and weight stones that can be used to temporarily improve weapon damage. They can also create several items that are used as ingredients for other Profession recipes, such as Enchanting. Blacksmiths can also create a few items that are needed for quests.
With the professions balanced to provide roughly equal benefits, blacksmithing hardly seems worth the soul-crushing amount of metal it takes to level. My pally is stuck at 240, and I've given up on it for the time being to focus on levelling over farming. I'll probably end up buying tonnes of the metal I need, but in the end I'll stick with it because of the work I already have invested, and my character taking pride in their chosen profession.
I rolled a Dwarf Rogue during the middle of BC, and picked up Blacksmithing for the ability to craft your own weapons. The level 70 MH swords were great for beginning raiders, and upgradable. You don't see weapons like Blazefury in Wrath, which is a shame. Blacksmithing is mostly armor craft, I'd like to see the diversity of the craft revitilized with Master Weaponsmith/Armorsmith in the next expansion.
